When Trump wins the 2016 election, Bunty Singhila, the son of Indian immigrants living on Devon Street in the heart of Chicago's "Little India,” comes out as a full-on hat-wearing member of the MAGA movement, creating conflict with his community, his parents and his sister – all of whom are hard-core to-the-end Democrats.
Election Day, 2016. Bunty stands at the foot of Trump Tower in Chicago feeling optimistic that a jerk off like Trump might actually become president. He muses that a possible Trump victory gives hope to men like himself with minor character deficits for a shining future replete with power and money. Bunty arrives at the University of Illinois – Chicago for his American Government class. He tells Soledad, a potential love interest in his mind only, that he’s not sure whom he is voting for, Trump or Clinton. Soledad tells Bunty that Trump is, in fact, a racist and misogynist bag of mayonnaise and puts a pro-Hillary sticker on his forehead where she thinks his brain might be. On campus Pro-Trump supporters led by Angus hold a march, chanting “Ban the Browns.” Bunty confirms with Angus that “brown” doesn’t include either him or Soledad since neither one is an “illegal.” At home in Chicago’s Little India neighborhood on Devon Street, pro-Trump conservative Hindus are gathered at the temple praying to Ganesh for a divine election intervention. Bunty’s mother, Madhu, and his sister, Ashlee, ready themselves to agitate against them while Bunty and his father, Suresh, go to the polls. Later that evening the Singhilas reconvene at home in front of the television. When Trump is declared the winner, Bunty confesses to Madhu, Suresh and Ashlee that he voted for Trump. The pro-Democrat Singhilas sob like the world is going to end leaving Bunty to celebrate alone with CNN. On campus the next day Angus holds a MAGA rally in honor of Trump’s triumph. Bunty tries to mediate between the Trump followers and the student Democrats who taunt them but to no avail. Soledad tells Bunty that she is a Dreamer and demands to know if she has a right to be in the US. Bunty is unsure. Soledad walks off. That night Bunty’s family attends an anti-Trump rally at Trump Tower. They wear “Not My President” hats. Arriving home, they find Bunty sitting on the couch wearing his new MAGA hat. He watches “All in the Family.” Ashlee sits on the couch and changes the channel to the local news. Madhu and Suresh join their children. Pro-Trump supporters have also gathered at Trump Tower. Though split politically for the foreseeable future, the Singhilas agree on one thing, at least: a sitcom of their own life would definitely be called “Alt in the Family.”
